He has stated his innocence concerning the indictments

Ex- FBI chief James the ex-FBI chief has pleaded not guilty to providing misleading information to lawmakers and obstructing a legislative process.

Mr Comey's legal representative entered the response representing him in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

His attorney declared he would seek to have the proceedings dismissed for various causes including that his defendant, a critic of Donald Trump, was being singled out.

The former director was charged shortly after Trump pressured his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.

Legal Proceedings

During the hearing on mid-week, Comey's lawyer Patrick Fitzgerald advised the magistrate they aimed to file several legal requests to throw out the legal matter before a court case, stating the legal action was retaliatory and that a federal prosecutor was unlawfully designated to handle the case.

Mr Comey's legal matter was originally handled by Erik Siebert, who resigned under scrutiny from Trump after his probe into a different opponent - NY AG Letitia James - was unable to file indictments.

Judicial Environment

The former director came across in good spirits as he walked into the court on mid-week, conversing with his legal team and being lighthearted. He was supported by his spouse, his wife and child Maureen Comey, a US lawyer who the former government terminated.

After listening to the magistrate state his constitutional guarantees and the dual charges against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, Mr Comey was questioned if he comprehended the accusations.

"I do your honour. Appreciate it," he stated to the judge.

Previous Events

Mr Comey was the head of the FBI from 2013 to 2017 and was dismissed about a few months into Trump's first term as national leader. At the time, Mr Comey was directing an investigation into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between Russia and Trump's campaign.

Throughout his leadership, the director triggered a negative reaction from Democrats when he stated just days before the 2016 election that he was examining political contender the candidate's use of a private email server. Legal actions against Clinton were not filed, causing disapproval from the Republican party as well.

Present Charges

Government attorneys allege Mr Comey gave untrue statements to Congress during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the Russia election probe. They say he provided false information to the upper house by stating he had not approved someone at the agency to release to journalistic entities details about the FBI investigations.

Legal representatives also accuse James Comey of "wrongfully trying to influence, hinder and slow" the legislative group by giving misleading testimony to it.

Public Statements

Through a recording James Comey shared to his Instagram after he was accused, he declared he was not guilty and alleged Donald Trump of behaving like a "tyrant".

"Our household have been aware for a long time that there are ramifications to opposing Mr Trump," he said. "We refuse to live on our bended knee."
"I'm innocent," he continued. "Thus initiate a court case."

The charges against James Comey surfaced after Donald Trump posted on digital channels calling for his top legal official, the attorney general, charge James Comey and other people.
